Description

This work translates three plays by Plautus, who combined Italian farce with the more polished Greek form of comedy. The text also presents discussions of the origins of Roman comedy, the realities of slavery, the role of women in Roman society and the nature and expectations of a Roman audience.

It's little known that Plautus' comedies were a major source for the Broadway and film hit: "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum".I can only hope that old Titus had comic actors of the quality of Zero Mostel, Phil Silvers, Jack Glifford, and Sir Michael Hordern to carry out his plots!Plautus' plays, written nearly two centuries before Augustus, are populated by people as real, as wise, as stupid, and as crazy, as anyone alive today. Their manias and phobias are ours; people don't really change--at least, not much in the course of a mere 2,500 years or so!
